It was another busy week of 49’s numbers action – but what were the hot numbers? Were there some more familiar figures rolling out? Or are there some new numbers on the block?

Read on to discover the latest number trends from one of the UK and South Africa’s most popular lotto numbers draws.

What Are Hot And Cold Numbers?

There are three common groups of lotto number pickers – those that choose numbers based on dates that mean something to them (e.g. birthdays, anniversaries, or the shirt number of a favourite footballer). We’ve coined several terms for said lotto players – we liked the ‘Sentimental Pickers’ – but none of them have caught on.

Then you have those that surrender to the supposed ‘stats’ – the ‘Maths Maestros’? OK, moving on!

These pattern predators (last nickname, promise) will track which numbers are trending and which are running colder than a freezer plugged into an igloo in the arctic circle. Hot numbers are the 49’s digits that have been cropping up more commonly of late, while cold numbers have been noticeable by their absence.

Fun Fact

Since the first ever 49’s draw, three of the top five numbers to have ever rolled out end with the number seven – 47 (1st), 37 (2nd), and 17 (5th). The other two numbers feature further down the list – 27 (13th) and 7 (39th).

This leads to the third category of pickers... the Lucky Number Lovers.

For example, seven is considered super lucky and extra significant by many. There are seven days of the week, seven continents and 7 is the biggest number of objects the human brain can instantly register before needing to count.

Christian Biblical scholars point out that in the creation story, God made the world in six days and rested on the seventh day. There is the suggestion that 7 can represent completeness or perfection in the Bible.

Like many other countries, Japan considers the number seven to be lucky - and 7 is an exalted number in Buddhism. Buddhists in Japan celebrate a baby’s seventh day and mourn the seventh day after a person dies when the soul is said to cross over.

In Japanese folklore there are the Shichifukuin (七福神 – the Seven Gods of Luck). Tanabata (七夕 – the Evening of the Seventh) is an important summertime holiday. And don’t forget James Bond 007 - apparently Ian Fleming chose it... because it sounded cool!
